Job Description: Carillonneur

The Carillonneur is a contract position, and reports to the Minister of Music

Qualifications: GCNA Certification or equivalent. Church experience preferred.

Duties:

• Play the carillon following worship on the first and third Sundays of each month for 30 minutes, 11:15-11:45 a.m.
  
• Play on additional dates as available, highlighting church and civic holidays.
  
• • October 11 – Tour Day (exact time commitment to be determined)
  • December 14 – Prelude for Brass and Organ Concert, 7-7:30 p.m.
  • Christmas Eve – Postlude for pageant service, 5-5:30 p.m.
  • Easter Sunday
• Holidays and Community Observances (play at noon):
  
• • November 11 – Veterans Day
  • May 25, 2026 – Memorial Day
  • June 19, 2026 – Juneteenth
  • July 4, 2026 – Independence Day (may schedule for July 3 if needed)

Other duties:

• Serve as an initial point of contact with the Verdin corporation regarding maintenance of the instrument, submitting recommendations to the Maguire Committee and the Minister of Music.
  
• Raise awareness of the instrument for the congregation and the community, utilizing social media and church communications.
  
• Possible expansion of duties may include summer concerts and scheduling guest artists
  

Rate: $200 per call.

Scheduling: Regular Sunday appearances may be altered with no less than two weeks’ notice. An exception is Easter Sunday, April 5. The carillonneur is expected to be present for at least 75% of scheduled dates, but may send a substitute with at least two weeks’ notice if conflicts arise.

About the instrument: Originally built in 1947 with 36 bells by Gillett and Johnson. It was enlarged to a 56-bell instrument in 1968, when the current tower was completed, with Paccard bells. Keyboard range: A#G/A#A. Transposition is up 1 semitone. Past carillonneurs are George Matthew, Jr., and Marietta Storm Douglas.
